Egg Aspiration

Egg aspiration, also known as egg retrieval, is a technique used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) in which eggs are collected from the ovary in order to be fertilized outside the body. This is one of the most important steps in IVF treatment, as a number of mature eggs need to be retrieved in order to produce viable embryos for implantation. The process of egg aspiration is performed on an out-patient basis, and the patient can usually go home a few hours after the eggs are retrieved.

aspirationDuring egg aspiration, healthy eggs are retrieved, inseminated and implanted into the uterus. Egg aspiration is used after hormone treatment has stimulated the ovaries to produce more eggs, and is timed so that the eggs are retrieved before they travel through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. When it comes to egg aspiration, timing is everything – if the eggs are harvested too early, they won’t fertilize; if they are harvested too late, they may have been released spontaneously or may be too mature.

Here at GREFI, egg aspiration and other fertilization procedures are conducted by specialists with expertise in IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies.
