Sex Selection

Sex selection is a growing trend among parents who wish to have a child of a specific gender, and describes the process of attempting to control the sex of the offspring. For years, prospective parents have used fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive when they may have otherwise been unable to, and to raise children without serious genetic disorders or conditions. Today, some couples utilize these same treatments to choose the gender of their children.

Pre-implantation techniques of sex selection involve actively rendering the second sex chromosome a Y chromosome (resulting in a male) or an X chromosome (resulting in a female). There are a number of reasons why couples may opt to choose the sex of their child – because they want to add a little girl to their brood of boys, or because they want a boy to carry on the family name, for example.
