What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment in which an egg is manually fertilized by sperm outside the body, and is commonly used when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed.

How long does it take to get started with IVF?

First, it is necessary to diagnose the cause(s) of a couple’s fertility problems.  Once that has been determined, IVF treatment can begin and usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks.

How much does IVF cost?

The cost of IVF treatment varies according to your diagnosis. Please contact our offices for estimates.

What medications will I be taking during IVF treatment?

Usually, fertility drugs are used in IVF treatment which increase the chances of conceiving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

Are medications included in the cost of a cycle?

No, medication is not included in the cost of IVF treatment.

How long does an egg retrieval take?

The process of egg retrieval varies according to the patient’s anatomy and diagnosis of fertility, however the process is outpatient and usually takes around 20min to 30min.

Is the egg retrieval painful?

Egg retrieval is done with intravenous sedation. The majority of patients report that it is not painful.

What surgeries can be performed at GREFI?

Minor surgies can be performed in-house at GREFI offices, however the more complex surgeries like, laparoscopy, myomectomy, cystectomy ect.,  are performed by Dr.Cruz at Hospital San Lucas, San Cristobal in Ponce, Centro Medico San Juan, or Hospital Pavia.

Can I exercise while I’m undergoing IVF treatment?

Speak with your doctor to accurately answer this question. Exerciser tolerance during therapy and while pregnant varies widely.

Can I travel during my IVF treatment?

Patients are advised not to travel within period 2 days before aspiration and 3 days after to embryo transfer.

When can we have intercourse after embryo transfer?

It is recommended to postpone intercourse 1 week after embryo transfer although it is not contraindicated.

How long of a wait is recommended between a failed IVF cycle and trying again?

We recommend waiting three menstrual cycles before trying IVF treatment again.

When will I know if I’m pregnant?

A pregnancy test is done 2 weeks after embryo transfer.

What happens if I become pregnant?

Two weeks after a positive pregnancy test,  a pelvic ultrasound will be performed to confirm pregnancy. You will then be refered to your gynecologist for prenatal care.

How long will I be with GREFI once I am pregnant?

All patients stay with GREFI up until week 12 of pregnancy, from then on you will be seen by your primary gynecologist for the remainder of  the pregnancy.
